Women of Our Time The National Portrait Gallery presents the lively faces of the 20th century's most famous and influential women in this crisp, stylish tribute to girl power. Each photograph is a biographical vignette of a woman who helped her gender gain the right to vote, hold public office, and climb the corporate ladder by the end of the century. The precociously poised Shirley Temple and a brooding image of child-star Judy Garland convey a sense of their off-screen personas. The steel of publishing magnate Katharine Graham, the passion of chef Julia Child, the clean-scrubbed ambition of Amelia Earhart, and the in-your-face attitude of anarchist Emma Goldman are clearly rendered. With the magical use of camera lens, film, paper, and photographic talent, this collection offers a striking sense of the personalities and individuals behind the larger-than-life names.
