Metropolitan Museum of Art: The Unicorn Tapestries The beautiful colors and fine craftsmanship of the Met's Unicorn Tapestries take you back to a time when mythical creatures were real. Alongside lions, stags, and hyenas, unicorns were hugely symbolic animals, and the story depicted on this set of medieval tapestries held multiple meanings. It was an entertaining tale of hunting, a metaphor for catching a husband, and a method of teaching about the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Thankfully, the Met provides a narrated video to guide you through the vast interlocking network of symbols. The detail of this work is astonishing. Over 100 species of plants are depicted, and a variety of medieval fashions are shown. Learn about the skill of the artisans behind these tapestries through a modern demonstration, complete with videos of weaving technique. This virtual Cloisters makes it easy to admire the magical one-horned beast. (in Design Arts) |
