New York Songlines The grand scale of the World Wide Web is clearly evident in its name. However, often times it's the local-interest web sites that make fascinating and original use of the Internet. The simple linear representations of streets in Manhattan on this site were created by Jim Naureckas in hopes of giving New Yorkers something they've lost by relying on maps: a sense of place. Each street is annotated with information about the past and current tenants of each address, many just ordinary shops or restaurants. You can travel a straight line, down Broadway for instance, or begin your journey at one of the suggested starting points, such as Washington Square Park or the Chelsea Hotel. And don't feel you have to stick to a straight course -- simply click an arrow to turn the corner. An amazing concept, this hypertext map of Manhattan offers a truly novel way to navigate the city.
