The Perilous Fight: America's World War II in Color This companion site to the PBS series brings WWII to life with vivid color and rich detail. The military aspect of war is well covered, touching on Pearl Harbor, the Battle of the Bulge, and the atom bombs. But the human side of events are fully explored, as well. Letters, photos, and journal entries tell the story of an American bomber pilot and the wife and baby he leaves behind. A young Marine writes of the gruesome, gut-wrenching scenes he witnessed on Okinawa. This site also explores the psychology of Japan's kamikaze pilots and the huge mental toll combat fatigue took on the troops. The atrocities of the Nazi concentration camps are documented alongside the anti-Semitism that helped delay America's entry into the war. Massive social changes on the home front are also showcased. With ample eyewitness documentation, this site serves as a strong, even-handed primer on WWII history. (in World War II) |
