The Edge of Enchantment Visit a land where magic and mysticism reign supreme. This Smithsonian exhibition uncovers the many encantos (enchanted places) of coastal Oaxaca in southern Mexico -- a region regarded by its inhabitants as an earthly portal to the spiritual world. Almost every village from Huatulco to Huamelula has its own encanto, such as El Morro, a dramatic rock outcropping in Bahía de Santa Cruz. Researcher Alicia Maria Gonzalez canvasses majestic bays, rivers, bayous, and mountains -- documenting the beliefs and practices surrounding each spot. In these lands, ancestral traditions are sometimes the only surviving records of the past. Within each section of the site, a brief essay is enhanced by photos that document the indigenous people, their way of life, their appreciation of the sacred, and the natural beauty of the place they call home.
