Pictoplasma Here's a site sure to tickle your fancy, soothe your eyes, and delight your senses. It's a colorful playground where contemporary character designs roam unchecked -- from hand-drawn aliens to 3D amoeba clusters. This online companion to the book Pictoplasma presents the whimsical "brainchildren" of the world's most talented artists, designers, and design firms. Get to know the enormous cast of characters (over 4,750!) by name of artist, country, graphic style (vector, shockwave, etc.), or by character. Click around and watch as psychotic beavers, sharp-eyed squirrels, and a "Bjorn to Kill" Swedish pony invade your monitor. Acquaint yourself with universal design motifs, as well as recurring themes popular to specific countries. Not limited to critters, the exhibit also includes iconography, font types, toy designs, and assorted cartoon screwballs. Noted characters like Super Mario and Pokemon are present -- but the real fun is discovering virtual unknowns. Traditionalists may scoff, but the technique, imagination, and emotion rendered here surely rival older paint-based genres. (in Design Arts) |
