AncientMexico.com The art, culture, and history of ancient Mesoamerica are beautifully illustrated on this site with photos, maps, and historical documents. This incredible primer explores the cities of pre-Columbian Mexico. For over 1,000 years, the grand urban centers of Teotihuacan, an important religious site, and Tenochtitlan, a trading hub, were the heart of the Aztec Empire. The Aztec and Mayan peoples also founded many cities in Mexico and Central America -- post-classical Chich'en Itza, densely populated Copan, and Bonampak with its colorful murals. Sadly, this lively and rich civilization met its match in 1519 with the arrival of the Spanish, who were first seen as strange gods. This tragic encounter led to the eventual conquest of the Aztecs, a story told here from the native point of view. Kudos to site creator Patrick Olivares for bringing a lost civilization to life with color and context. (in Mexico) |
