Lost Labor The site's designer Raymon Elozua grew up on the south side of Chicago, a neighborhood crowded with mills and factories. He eventually went on to work for one of the mills, Inland Steel, to finance his college education. Since that first day of employment at the mill, he's been fascinated with the "acres of buildings, furnaces, and mills, all dedicated to a specific function, the preparation of iron ore into basic steel and finished products." His interest has led to these pictures of men and women building an industrial America. Images of the steel industry illustrate the sheer magnitude of the work performed, while the pictures in the consumer section show the production of everything from tobacco to radios. This study of "lost labor" impresses in its ability to capture the integral role labor played in building America. (in U.S. History) |
