Drive-Ins The brother-and-sister team of Kipp and Jennifer Sherer started researching drive-ins in 1995. The fruits of their labor can be found on this site, a tribute to their love of old drive-in movie theaters and desire for new ones. With over 6,000 photos and details on more than 4,700 drive-ins in the U.S. and Canada, the database is a work in progress as visitors add their memories. Learn about the history of the drive-in from its invention by Richard Hollingshead in 1933, through its glory days of the late '40s and early '50s, on to its eventual decline in the '70s and '80s, when the number of theaters sank to less than 600. Then take a look at the small resurgence drive-in theaters are currently enjoying. The Drive-in Boneyard features a photo exhibit of decrepit, yet artistic drive-ins. The Road Trips section chronicles the site creators' tours of drive-ins around the country, while personal stories recall hot summer nights spent watching flicks from the comfort of a car. Get in the backseat, snuggle up with a loved one, and enjoy the double feature. (in Theaters) |
