NASA EdSpace In the early 1980s, NASA developed the Teacher in Space Program in an effort to better connect the American public with the space program. Unfortunately, the program was suspended after the Space Shuttle Challenger accident in 1986 when the first teacher in space, Christa McAuliffe, died along with the rest of the crew. Now the idea of a teacher in space has been resurrected. Instead of simply picking a teacher for one mission, NASA aims to recruit full-time astronauts who have teaching experience. The Educator Astronauts will be regular members of the Astronaut Corps and trainee for all duties a Mission Specialist performs on the shuttle. Math, physical science, engineering, and biological science teachers can apply now or be nominated. Even if you're not on a crew, you can learn all about astronaut training and living in space -- don't miss the video about using a toilet in zero gravity! (in Astronomy and Space) |
