The Sensuous and the Sacred: Chola Bronzes from South India This Flash site offers an illustrated primer on South India's bronze religious statuary. Start with the "Who's Who in Bronze" section to learn the names, emblems, and symbols of some major Hindu gods. Vishnu, the "eternal husband," was the role model for Hindu rulers, while Shiva takes many forms, often heroic, and is much beloved in South India. In the "From Wax to Gold" section, video narration by an Indian artisan explains the age-old method used to create these statues. More than just art that sits on a shelf, the bronzes are holy items regularly bathed and dressed in silks, jewels, and flowers by temple priests. This site also features the perspective of American Hindus who discuss their temple rituals and worship. These thousand-year-old statues are part of a living, breathing tradition that continues to this day. (in Religion & Spirituality) |
