PBS: Freedom: A History of U.S. Based on Joy Hakim's award-winning history books for kids, this PBS site explores America's promise of freedom, which has attracted everyone from the original colonists-turned-rebels to 19th- and 20th-century immigrants. It also addresses the many "unfreedoms" in this country, particularly the fatal contradiction of slavery. Also discussed are the struggles for freedom that inspired social movements in favor of women's suffrage, labor unions, and civil rights for African Americans. Learn about these issues through 16 webisodes that include audio clips, photos, PDF files, timelines, and glossaries, and then read personal stories of freedoms enjoyed and denied. You can even get involved locally through history societies and museums or by researching your own genealogy. This site gives an excellent background on freedom, a story that continues to unfold today. (in U.S. History) |
