National Geographic: Lewis & Clark Lewis and Clark's journey across the uncharted frontier is chronicled on this epic National Geographic web site. Using journal entries, drawings, maps, and historical photos, the site offers a realistic peek into the foreign and hostile world the discoverers explored. The two years, four months, and 10 days they spent traversing the continent were arduous yet punctuated by the spectacular natural beauty of the Great Plains and the Rockies. For instance, they recorded 300 plant and animal species previously unknown to science, and they encountered nearly 50 Native American tribes. A timeline from 1803 to 1806 gives an overview of the expedition, while the supply list provides clues to their survival. National Geographic even has a Lewis and Clark movie in theaters. The explorers didn't find the fabled Northwest Passage, but their legendary journey did open up a whole new world. (in Lewis and Clark) |
