Smoking Gun: Backstage Pass
Musicians  often need certain things to help them "rock you like a proverbial hurricane." That's where backstage riders come in. In addition to listing specifications for stage design and lighting rigs, riders contain an artist's wish list -- from transportation to dressing rooms to meals. For example, dizzy diva Mariah Carey requires a box of bendy straws, apparently to sip her Cristal champagne. ZZ Top demands one medium serving bowl of coctail (sic) franks in a special sauce (recipe can be procured from a production assistant). But good old Joe Cocker seems to have this whole backstage thing figured out. He demands that his eight bottles of Corona beer be iced at 6 p.m., re-iced at 8 p.m., and again at 10:45, just as he breaks into "With a Little Help from My Friends." (in Music Humor) |
