New York City Subway Resources

Travel under the streets of New York City and experience all the twists, turns, tunnels, and trains of the Big Apple's subway system. This nifty site's Rolling Stock section highlights the locomotives and work cars of the subway, offering thousands of pictures of the current and retired fleets, as well as the trainyards that house the cars. A collection of Subway Maps details the evolution of the system from the 1880s to present day. Exploring the site is analogous to riding the subway -- there's something interesting at every stop.

Signs

They tell you where to go, what to do, and why you should do it. And despite their ubiquity, the signs that make up a good part of the American landscape are usually met with no more than a passing glance. Aiming his camera straight at good old-fashioned signage of all shapes and sizes, Philip Chmiel provides a glimpse into the underappreciated art of signs. From gaudy neon relics of the '50s to the garish paintings of today, signs surround us. By browsing through this intriguing collection of photos, you might just learn a little bit about good sign design.

Operation Migration

Imagine you're an orphan who needs to get from Wisconsin to Florida without a map. Could you make it? Luckily, for a few fortunate orphaned whooping cranes and Canadian geese, there was a helping hand. A group of determined human surrogate parents have taken the endangered waterfowl under their wing, and coaxed them to safer, warmer climes by piloting ultralight aircraft and simulating the migratory pathfinding of the birds' parents. It's a beautiful undertaking that's even sparked Hollywood's imagination. With the noble goal of saving one of the largest flying birds, the whooping crane (only 188 left in a single flock), these daring pilots could use your support.

Paul's Boutique Samples and References List

Some albums can be considered instant classics, like Creed's Weathered. Other works take a while to gather critical and fan acclaim, like the Beastie Boys' 1989 release, Paul's Boutique. Disdained when it came out because it veered heavily from the raucous party sound of Licensed to Ill, the album is now recognized as one of rap's finest moments. Relying heavily on samples both obscure and well-known, the sonic collage they created lends itself to the extreme level of dissemination this site provides. You'll learn the source of every beat, scratch, and rhyme. Put the album on, browse along track-by-track, and discover why this album sounds as relevant today as it did twelve years ago.

Fast Forward (R.I.P.)

Los Angeles -- a massive collection of suburbs, connected by a tangle of freeways, backdrop to the glitz and gore of Hollywood; Angelenos and their lifestyle have always been an easy target of disdain. L.A. native and photojournalist Lauren Greenfield points her lens at her dusty SoCal roots, making a fairly solid case for some of that disdain, at least among young Angelenos. Her photo book Fast Forward contains the expected images of 18-year-old girls in West Hollywood under the cosmetic knife, 13-year-olds at a bar mitzvah with strippers, preteen child star wannabes, and gang bangers tagging their turf in South Central. Yet, beyond the obvious absurdities lie stories of young people just trying to make it through puberty like everyone else.

Turbulence

Since 1996, Turbulence has been supporting and commissioning art "that advances creative use of the network." The result is a preview of the future -- multimedia works that challenge browser boundaries and bandwidth constraints. We blasted into orbit for a simulated walkthrough of the International Space Station. We looked and listened for the Shape of Song, via software that transforms musical patterns into translucent arches, so that every composition, from Bach to Madonna, has its own visual fingerprint. We got lost following the corporate adventures of More Inc.'s Employee #12995. Now that's turbulence.
