| Literacy Through Photography Wendy Ewald, noted photographer and teacher, launched this project in the Durham (North Carolina) Public School System in 1989. The two-week workshop has since grown into an ongoing program that shows schoolchildren how to find their creative voice through photography and writing. Students photograph scenes from their lives, develop and print the images, then use the images to write their own stories. For example, Black Self/White Self is a photo essay by 5th and 6th graders in which they visualize themselves in a different skin color. This is an exhilarating look at how inspirational teachers can motivate their students to create something remarkable. |
