Read up on World Cup news and learn about the tournament's 32 elite teams. Destination Asia delves into host countries Korea and Japan and the momentous occasion of having the World Cup in Asia for the first time. Don't miss the Entertainment section for all the latest games, mascot schwag, music, and downloads. Finally, the Pure Football and Tournament sections look back at World Cup history, while also previewing next summer's month-long Copa Mundial.

Linkdup

In this age of the ever-expanding Web, it can be difficult to find the freshest and coolest sites. To help those who appreciate the aesthetic, the folks at new media shop preloaded have created Linkdup, an amazing collection of links to sites that are compelling, entertaining, and sometimes jaw-dropping. We were simply blown away by the collection of sites, from the wildly imaginative design shop sites to the time-wasting Shockwave games. And the best part is it's a non-commercial endeavor -- they simply want to "bring you the best, impartially."

Literacy Through Photography

Wendy Ewald, noted photographer and teacher, launched this project in the Durham (North Carolina) Public School System in 1989. The two-week workshop has since grown into an ongoing program that shows schoolchildren how to find their creative voice through photography and writing. Students photograph scenes from their lives, develop and print the images, then use the images to write their own stories. For example, Black Self/White Self is a photo essay by 5th and 6th graders in which they visualize themselves in a different skin color. This is an exhilarating look at how inspirational teachers can motivate their students to create something remarkable.

2001 Antarctic Expedition

Meet Ally McSeal and the Lucky Pup, a couple of playful Weddell seals, a unique species that lives in Antarctica and can dive up to 400 meters deep in freezing waters. A team of biologists donned their cold weather gear and traveled to the South Pole to study these amazing creatures. This site takes you right into the frozen tundra and details the discoveries the biologists make regarding the Weddell seal and its habits. At least online, you won't risk frostbite and snow blindness.

Great Castles of Wales

Even in these modern times, castles still spur the imagination. The proud citizens of Wales want to show off their bonny countryside and point out the architectural marvels of their Celtic civilization. There are a lot more to these stone sentinels (400 throughout the country) than fairy-tale romanticism. Each castle tells a story of a spirited people battling for their territory and political independence. Through wars, natural disasters, brutal monarchs, and even good ol' Prince Charles, the lyrical Welsh spirit endures beyond the misty moors in grand style.

Design Not Found

The folks at 37 Signals design visual interfaces for many large companies, and through their work they've found many sites with "contingency design flaws." What is contingency design? Well, it's the page or error message that pops up when something goes wrong on the Web -- a mistyped URL, an incorrect password, or a page that no longer exists. The design and wording of these error notifications is crucial because if poorly executed, a consumer will likely leave in frustration, never to return. This site provides concrete examples of and commentary on both good design and gobbledygook alike.

Mark Twain: A Film Directed by Ken Burns

This Ken Burns-directed film airs on PBS in January, but you don't have to wait to explore and discover Twain artifacts, photos, sound clips, and ephemera. Twain was a dedicated scrapbooker who even patented his "self-pasting" scrapbook invention in 1872. This site features nine online scrapbooks that chronicle Twain's life, including the Tom Sawyer Days of his boyhood on the Mississippi (1835-1853), his courtship and enduring marriage to New Yorker Olivia Langdon Clemens, and the lonely Mysterious Stranger years at the end of his life (1908-1910).
