John Coltrane

Long recognized as one of the premier saxophonists of the 20th century, John Coltrane produced a remarkable amount of material, both as a band leader and a sideman. This site beautifully combines the music, the man, and his legacy. Starting with the basics, it offers a comprehensive discography, a brief biography, and a nice audio sampler of Trane's music. Beyond that, you'll find information on the John Coltrane Foundation, which works to provide opportunities for talented young musicians to learn and play. Finally, there are links to related artists and selected jazz resources from academia, the music business, and beyond. It's an impressive site, and rightly so, since it honors the life and work of a truly legendary artist.

All Species

The goal of the All Species Project is overwhelming yet admirable: “within the span of our own generation (twenty-five years), to record and genetically sample every living species of life on Earth.” As biologist E.O.Wilson points out, we know how many stars there are in the Milky Way, yet can't pinpoint how many species currently occupy our home planet with any degree of certainty. Current estimates range anywhere from 1.4 to 200 million, a wide margin for error. With the help of donations from individuals and foundations, this nonprofit organization hopes to remedy the situation and provide a “roster of our fellow inhabitants.”

September 11 Web Archive

This digital archive is a collaboration between the Library of Congress, the Internet Archive, and WebArchivist.org. Its mission is to gather and preserve web sites related to the events of September 11, 2001. The "Wayback Machine" technology stores old versions of web pages, much as traditional archives store old newspapers and documents of historic interest. Locate memorial sites, tributes, eyewitness accounts, charitable organizations, and news sources from around the world. From the resolute U.S. Department of Defense to the irreverent Onion, you'll find web pages here to make you laugh, make you cry, or help you understand these challenging times.

The Journey is the Destination

Dan Eldon was a 22-year-old photojournalist who died in 1993 covering the conflict in Mogadishu, Somalia. His handwritten journals are fabulous collages of newspaper clippings, photos and snapshots, pencil sketches, hand-drawn and annotated maps, scrapbook elements, and found images. The notebooks begin in Africa in the early '80s with his childhood travels and adventures, and end in 1993 at the time of his death. Currently housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the journals can be toured virtually using Flash technology. We found captions like: "Imagine a world without wheels and containers," "Loita'ing with the Masai," and "The Ostrich Who Came in From the Cold" on pages alive with humor, compassion, irony, and joy.

Hemophilia

This site is an incredibly easy-to-read overview of the blood condition that affects one in every 4,000 men of all ethnic backgrounds. (Females can have the disorder, but the occurrence is much rarer in women.) Starting with its causes, the site guides you through the nuts and bolts of how the disorder is inherited, diagnosed, treated, and experienced by its carriers. Animated presentations of blood vessels that don't properly clot and how the hemophilia genes mutate help to explain the disease's pathology in a way that's more accessible than any medical journal. While researchers continue to hunt for a cure, treatment is available through injections that help stem uncontrollable blood flow.

They Rule

"They" are the board members of Fortune 100 companies, and you can use this site to see the relationships between these companies. Click on "Add Company" and select a favorite, then click on the board table's "plus" sign and select "Expand" to see the names of that company's board of directors. Next, click on a board member's briefcase -- let's try Sam Nunn -- and select "Expand" again to view other companies on whose board that person sits. (Nunn also sits on the boards of General Electric, Texaco, and Dell Computers.) You can also click on "Load Map" to see the connections that others have suggested. Did you know that there are 72 guys named "John" on the boards of Fortune 100 companies? Or how few steps there are between Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard?

Why Project

After the attacks of September 11, many people were overwhelmed with the need to respond to the attacks by helping those in need. Artist Bill Bartee did his part by creating this fascinating online exhibit as a forum for artists and writers to express themselves in the wake of the tragedies. Artists from many nations have submitted their work, making this a truly international effort. The poetry, narratives, film, and visual art can be viewed by country or date, and if the attacks have prompted you to create something, the web site welcomes submissions.
