Ghoul Britannia (R.I.P.)

Horror fan Stuart Mitchell pays homage to Hammer Film Productions, the great British production house that produced dozens of classic chillers from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s. Derided by critics in their time, films like The Abominable Snowman, The Quatermass Experiment, and The Brides of Dracula went on to inspire directors like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas (several Hammer greats like Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee pop up in Star Wars films). As your host explains, "The video nasty phenomenon left me stone cold, not because I found the films offensive, but because they are deadly dull. My kind of horror film is based on story and atmosphere, not violence."

Japanese Engrish

No smorking in building. Flesh juice. Auto rock. While we can't condone this site's ill-chosen title, we are happy to report that it offers a good-natured look at the vagaries of grammar across the international date line. From poems found on coffee cups, "The Art of Hot / Side by side, I'll be yours forever. / Because please don't weep" to slogans printed on spare tire covers, "Whenever and everywhere, we can meet our best friend nature. Take a grip of steering! Nissan."

Marconi Calling

Brought to you by the Marconi Corporation, a global provider of communications and information technology solutions, this site examines the life, science, and achievements of Guglielmo Marconi, often referred to as the pioneer of wireless communication. Use the timeline to learn more about the man -- it covers 67 of the most important events in Marconi's life. Equally interesting are the self-contained exhibitions that cover the significant milestones of the development of wireless. The Communications section features layers and layers of fascinating information on the advent of wireless technology. We couldn't stop clicking!

SurLaLune Fairy Tale Site

Kid-eating witches, boot-wearing cats, spindle-pricked princesses -- all your fairy-tale favorites are lovingly annotated at SurLaLune. Within each section, site creator Heidi Anne Heiner tells the tale, analyzes the story's symbols, outlines its history, includes famous illustrations, catalogs modern interpretations, and provides an extensive bibliography. Despite its scholarly trappings, SurLaLune overflows with the magic of fairy godmothers and talking animals.

The Alger Hiss Story (R.I.P.)

This exhaustive multimedia archive from New York University Library examines the trial of Alger Hiss, a New Deal democrat and government official who was tried and convicted of espionage in 1950. Hiss maintained his innocence until his death five years ago, and the case continues to produce new documents, arguments, and theories. How important was his trial? "Richard M. Nixon, then an unknown, first-term Congressman from California, became nationally famous for his pursuit of Alger Hiss, and 20 years later, in 1968, was elected president. Ronald Reagan, because of the Hiss case, turned his back on New Deal liberalism, embraced conservative views, and, after entering politics, became President in 1980."

Within These Walls

The National Museum of American History presents the history of a 250-year-old house and 5 of the families that have occupied it over the past 200 years. Built in the mid-1760s, the Ipswich, Massachussetts, house's diverse inhabitants have included colonists (1757-1772), revolutionaries (1777-1789), reformers (1836-1865), and immigrants (1870-1890). The actual house was moved from Massachusetts and now resides on the Smithsonian second floor. If you can't make it to Washington, D.C., this site allows you to experience the great changes and events of the nation's past through the eyes of these families.
