Plastic

"Somewhere between anarchy and hierarchy," between Suck and Feed, between highbrow Arts and Letters Daily and AltCulture's catalog, there's Plastic. The recently launched "live collaboration between the Web's smartest readers and the Web's smartest editors" delivers news and opinion in an interactive, open source, group-blog format developed by the creators of Slashdot, an influential technology forum and news source. A recent front page featured wistful commentary on Dubya's dance moves, an uncompassionate Oregonian's look at California's power problems, and a bit about robotic bodily fluids.

Edward Ardizzone: Diary of a War Artist

This exhibit, from the UK's Imperial War Museum, features excerpts from the journals of commissioned war artist Edward Ardizzone. Presented in a clickable calendar format, the diary entries present an illustrated narrative of the British capture of Sicily and invasion of Italy. It's a poignant, personal glimpse into mundane events in the lives of soldiers, journalists, and local inhabitants. Ardizzone's graceful sketches and handwritten text describe bombed-out villages, eggplants and indigestion, fine wine and cross-cultural camaraderie.

Lunar Orbiter Photographic Atlas of the Moon

Launched to snap high-resolution pictures of potential Apollo landing sites, the Lunar Orbiter missions brought back hundreds of crisp lunar photographs. Consider this your one-stop shop for massive digital images of creepy black and white moonscapes. You'll find all of your favorite lunar features here: Mont Blanc, the Sea of Tranquility, the Tycho Crater. And all of you Pink Floyd fans will appreciate several large glossies of the dark side of the moon! Needless to say, this makes excellent screensaver material.

Lingua Franca | Breakthrough Books (R.I.P.)

Lingua Franca, the rag of choice for academic types, presents this collection of seminal books that have "defined a particular area of thought." The creme de la creme, the top guns, the grande fromages -- these are the books that rule the schools. From Suburbia to Cognitive Science, the Welfare State to Neglected Fiction, these are the books that the brainiacs worship. And to shamelessly jump on the PBS bandwagon, you'll also find some great books on Jazz.

Seeing Ear Theatre

The Sci Fi channel presents this intriguing collection of online audio dramas that's guaranteed to delight and befuddle. It's brand new, and somewhat mysterious, but we like what we hear. John Ritter plays a sheriff battling some personal and not-so personal demons in the gothic By the Fright of the Silvery Moon. Peter Gallagher and Stanley Tucci consider the consequences of a curious new structure in the abstract-to-the-point-of-practically-nonexistent An Elevator and a Pole. And from the creator of Babylon 5 comes the surrealistic City of Dreams series, featuring the vocal talents of Andre Braugher, Steve Buscemi, Tim Curry, and John Turturro.

The Fertility Race

In the late 1990s, Minnesota Public Radio broadcast this series on infertility and the social issues related to advanced reproductive technologies. Listen to the original audio, or explore insightful articles on the history of American attitudes toward infertility, surrogate motherhood, the vast and profitable fertility industry, a generation of test-tube babies, and sperm and egg donation. There's a wealth of unbiased information here -- glossaries, statistics, personal accounts, photo albums, and links to organizations across the fertility spectrum.

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

San Francisco has a global reputation for exotic flora and fauna, so it shouldn't be too surprising to learn that flocks of colorful, intelligent, and adaptable parrots make their home in some of the city's most appealing neighborhoods. Mark Bittner has been an impassioned advocate and observer of these photogenic birds since 1989. This site documents the history of the Telegraph Hill flock, records sightings and patterns of flock social behavior, and chronicles the lifestyles and habitats of other feral, urban parrot relatives.

Toyadz.com

Submitted for your perusal: a colorful archive of classic toy advertisements, hand-picked from the dusty comic books of Generation X yore. You'll find an array of familiar brands here, including Hot Wheels, Mattel, Corgi, Daisy BB Guns, and Silly Putty. Many of these advertisements work as great comic narratives in their own right, like the cliffhanger Dungeons and Dragon strips. Highlights include the classic 12-inch Fighting Man GI Joe, the failed Twist N' Turn Barbie experiment, and the terrifying Kool Aid Man Video Game.
